    I love a classic beef burger topped with grilled pineapple and melted feta cheese. The combination of sweet and salty flavors is incredible!

    Robyn,

    The Lauterbach household has been grilling up “Ethel Burgers” for years. What is an “Ethel Burger” you ask? i’m happy to share! Named after my late Grandmother Ethel Lauterbach, an Ethel Burger is a delicious hamburger/cheeseburger recipe chock-full of goodness.

    Ethel used to fire up their Weber and grill these burgers to perfection. Her husband Harold was a man of few words but he would always give Ethel a big hug and kiss when she made these for dinner.

    Here’s the recipe:

    Hamburger 2 lbs (80/20)
    Diced White Onion (1/2 onion, lg
    Oatmeal (1/2 cup) (Not instant!!)
    Worcestershire Sauce (2 tlb)
    Garlic Powder (1 tlb)
    Salt and Pepper To Taste

    Hand form Burgers into 1/4 or 1/2 lb burgers (don’t over handle the meat!)
    Fire up the grill. Grill burgers. Add slab of sharp cheddar cheese towards end. Toast buns

    Have the following available for burger building:

    Ketchup, Mayo and Sweet relish mixed together ( 2 tlb each)
    lettuce (romaine or iceburg)
    Slabs of raw, red onion
    Slabs of Tomato

    I’m mostly a traditionalist when it comes to burgers. Cheese, usually cheddar, lettuce, tomatoe, pickles, mustard and ketchup and sometimes bacon. Always grilled to medium. Keep it simple.

    Robyn….my family’s favorite burger is a grrrrilled slyder with onion relish.

    2lb fresh ground 85/15 chuck
    1 package process style pepper cheese chunks
    1 tbs butter
    1 large sweet Vidalia onion
    1 tsp brown sugar
    1 tbs balsamic vinegar
    1 package dollar rolls
    kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
    1 12 pack pale ale

    Heat grill for direct cooking.
    Cut onion into medium-long, thin slices. Heat butter over low heat, add onions. Cook for 20+ mins until soft Add brown sugar and vinegar, cooking for at least 10 mins more until brown and soft.
    Shape meat into several small patties. Place a chunk of cheese between two patties and shape meat around it to seal. Salt and pepper both sides generously. Cook quickly to medium. Serve on dollar rolls topped with onion jam and a nice pale ale.

    My family LOVES the 4th of July! Not only is it awesome because we are celebrating our Independence, but it’s a great time to get the family together.
    We usually go over my sister’s house (she’s got the big yard) and we blast the music and everyone brings a dish.
    For many years the men did the grilling, but no more! Inspired by http://grillgrrrl.com/ my sisters and nieces are on grill duty! My sister makes the most delicious ribs on the grill, everyone loves my pork –kabobs and my other sister gets her daughter grilling the most delicious “pan con Chorrizo – Argentinean style”.

    Now for the burgers, sorry I got carried away with all the good stuff we make on the grill. We salt and pepper the patties the day before.
    Once the grill is set we place them on the grill for about 4 minutes on each side depending how thick they are and how well we want to cook them (NEVER pushing down on them) .
    Meanwhile we set up platters with all the trimmings you want to add.
    Two or three different cheeses, cooked onions, raw onions, tomatoes slices, lettuce, chimichurri, mustard, ketchup etc.

    Finally my favorite burger recipe is cooked medium well, I like to add two types of cheeses, raw onions, a bit of Chimichurri, ketchup, mayo and some mustard, yum!

    Grilled with just a bit of BBQ sauce, not too much. I like cheddar and peper jack cheese, with raw red onions, lettus, tomato, bacon, mayo, mustard, (again just a little) and crispy onion strings. And I personally like the hamburger buns buttered and tosted before I build my burger. That’s my idea of the perfect 4th of July BBQ burger!

    Robyn…my family loves my grrrrilled slyders…small burgers stuffed with spicy cheese and a sweet onion relish.

    2lb fresh ground 85/15 ground chuck
    1 package pepper cheese (processed melts best) cut into 2 x 2 squares
    2 large onions, sliced in half then into long strips
    1 tsp brown sugar
    1 tbs balsamic vinegar
    1 package dollar rolls
    2 tbs butter + more for butter for the rolls
    garlic salt
    kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper to taste

    Form beef around 1 piece of cheese, sealing edges and forming small patty about 3 x 3 inches. Place in fridge while pre-heating grill.

    Melt butter in large pan over medium heat. Throw in onions and saute for about 20 mins. Turn down heat to low. Mix in brown sugar, pinch of kosher salt and balsamic. Heat for another 15 to 20 mins until very soft. Set aside.

    Pull slyders from fridge and sprinkle with kosher salt and pepper just before grilling to medium.

    Butter cut side of buns then lightly dust butter with garlic salt. Quickly toast buns on grill. Stack slyders on top of buns and top with onion relish.

    It doesn’t get much better than these little bites of heaven.

    The best burger is 70/30 ground beef seasoned with salt and pepper, charcoal grilled medium rare, with mustard, dill pickle and vidalia sweet onions.

    I have eaten an absurd number of burgers with an almost upsetting variety of toppings at a purely ridiculous number of restaurants, bars, cookouts and cafeterias, and I think I have distilled and collected all of their Goods and avoided or cut out most of their Bads to create the near perfect recipe for my tastes. Now, let me clarify, flavored or specialty burgers are a class all their own, but here, I’m talking about the good ole American original.

    The tale of the perfect burger starts with the pork……ERRRRRKKKKK!!!!! (Car slamming on the brakes sound effect). Did he say the pork? Yes, he did. Credit the awesome Baja Burger restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama for introducing me to pork burgers. Pure beef can just get so dry, that once I started adding a little pork, my burgers were added to the menus of the restaurants in heaven.
    I have discovered that the perfect pork to cut the beef is pork sausage. It has great seasoning already, and it is full of fat which means juicy goodness. I use about a pound of 90/10 ground beef and about 1/2 a pound of pork sausage. When mixing, I then add about 3 tablespoons of A-1 sauce and 1 teaspoonful garlic powder and mix. Like any ground meat, don’t over mix, because it can get tough. Then, a light brush with olive oil, some salt and pepper, and they are ready for the scorching hot grill.
    Cheese selection can make or break the whole thing, so we use two slices of smoked gouda, which is creamy, smoky and slightly tangy. You’ll literally abhor the idea of ever using another cheese after you discover a smoked gouda burger. I bet you’re in your fridge right now throwing all that cheddar in the trash.
    Apply the cheese at the last minute and close the grill lid for a melty finish.

    For accoutrements, we add bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and some sweet/spicy habanero bread and butter pickles that my wife made during the fall. Add a fresh potato roll and the perfect burger is complete.

    My favorite style of burger is the Carolina “all the way” burger with chili, cheese, diced white onion, and mustard. The best burger I ever tasted was from a small dive in Elizabethtown NC called Melvins that made them this way. I have come close but have not been able to get that exact flavor profile.
